Betty Ferguson Foundation Update

In April, Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital called and asked us if we could help a young couple who had just had a baby and needed a car seat. We were thrilled to be asked. We contacted Scott Campbell at Toys “R” Us and he said he would help us out. He actually donated not only the car seat, but also some newborn diapers and a padded liner as well!
Also, in April we hosted a Master Plan Meeting for the City of Santa Clarita. A light dinner was served to the 30 teens and parents who attended. The focus of the meeting was how the city can help teens with safety issues, education and social activities. Thank you, guest speakers, Veronica Navarro and Luz Fabic of the City of Santa Clarita, who led this meeting.
So far this year, our youth group, Youth With A Voice, has logged 280 volunteer hours. Congratulations! Our expanded Youth With A Voice program has been greeted with much enthusiasm. In April we hosted our first Junior High Youth With A Voice where we discussed what it is like to be a teen and what concerns the girls have as well as training for volunteer service in the community. The High School Youth With A Voice meeting had a demonstration on self-defense by an instructor from the Santa Clarita Athletic Club. Our mission for our YWAV division is “Training in leadership skills and community service.”
In May our women’s division, Mes Amies, will be honored by having Marsha McLean, city councilwoman, speak on women in politics and how women can get involved. All women are welcome to come to Mes Amies meetings held the third Tuesday of each month. Please call the center for more information.
Thank you to the Child and Family Center for allowing our women and teens to volunteer for “Taste of the Town,” Sunday, May 2.
On July 31, 2004, we are holding our Woman of Honor Dinner and Auction at the Valencia Hyatt. This year we are honoring Dianne White Crawford for her ability to give hope to women who have or have had breast cancer. All profits from Dianne’s company, Pink Ribbon Gifts, go to support the Sheila R. Veloz Breast Imaging Center.
