On June 19 at 9 a.m., cancer survivors, supported by their families and friends, gathered at College of the Canyons to help fight for a cure for cancer. They joined as one to walk the first lap of the event. With generosity and affection in their hearts, many Santa Clarita residents were present to support them and the cause.
The objective of the Relay was to get local companies and clubs throughout the SCV to team up and raise money. Tents were set up to represent each group to show their support by having people contribute in the 24-hour walk. Good spirits encouraged by enthusiasm kept many walkers motivated by engaging themselves in exercise throughout the night. The various sponsors, ranging from Valencia Acura to Valencia Car Wash, brought a sense of undeniable togetherness.
Youth with a Voice, also known as YWAV, was amongst the diverse volunteers. Ten girls, three advisors, all united simultaneously with the persistent goal to make a difference. Amanda Hardy, a member of YWAV, proudly asks, “While some may volunteer because cancer has affected their life, our group does it because we can and we care. Why not make a difference when we have so much to offer?” The girls of YWAV raised about $3,000 by encouraging family members, businesses, and even their employers to donate money.
The unforgettable experience of witnessing Santa Clarita residents gather for one cause has impacted the lives of many. Although many came throughout the day to observe the occasion at the local community college, hundreds upon hundreds of people congregated at the Luminary ceremony to honor those who have passed from cancer, which took place at 10pm. The Relay for Life exposes the harsh reality of the effects of cancer to those it afflicts, but the residents of Santa Clarita Valley as well. "Who would have known that so many people care enough to help?" an unidentified cancer survivor wondered.
The event was truly an experience that touched anyone and everyone who contributed. While the 2004 Relay for Life rules state that, "there is no finish line until we find a cure," the generosity of the volunteers has equipped cancer patients with the hope that there is a future for them.
