The Magazine of Santa Clarita, August 2002 Article: You've Got The Power
The Betty Ferguson Foundation proudly announces their City of Santa Clarita grant-funded workshop for high-school girls, You’ve Got The Power, on Saturday, September 21 at the Hyatt Valencia. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. The workshop is from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Facilitators will include Shauna Hoffman, local acting coach and psychotherapist, M.A., MFT, Judy Cox, workshop coordinator, and our senior members of Youth With A Voice (YWAV.) The program will consist of an ice-breaker, a series of worksheets and a collage project to help the girls focus on who they are, what their goals and values are, and the tools needed to develop their own boundaries. During part of the workshop Ms. Hoffman will guide the girls through some role-playing and acting out some of the possible situations young girls face in their daily lives. Lunch will be provided, and each girl will receive her own survival basket containing various gift items provided by local businesses. The baskets are to provide a source of comfort and be something refreshing for the girls to incorporate in their lives. A journal is given to encourage the girls to document their challenges, accomplishments and goals. A follow-up program, called Open House, will provide the girls with a place to come once a month to share current experiences, conflicts and joys. The girls will join the ongoing meeting, held the fourth Wednesday of each month from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. The Betty Ferguson Foundation, whose mission is to train, develop and empower women and youth to be a vital force in society, sponsors Youth With A Voice. YWAV’s mission is training in leadership and community service. The cost is $15. Please make checks payable to The Betty Ferguson Foundation. Seating is limited, so please reserve by September 16. Scholarships are available.
